Those who don’t have subscriptions to cable or own televisions, but who are savvy users of internet service providers in Chicago Illinois appear to be viewing their favorite movies and shows in a novel way: by using other peoples’ passwords. But that doesn’t mean they’re stealing the keys to Netflix accounts: these passwords are apparently being shared willingly. Some of the services being used include HBO Go and Hulu.
Although no extensive research has been done about just how deep the password-sharing rabbit hole goes, opinions have been mixed. Some say that this spells future disaster for sites like Netflix if it isn’t curbed in a timely manner. Others were barely fazed by the news – possibly because of their next-to-no ability to track which of their customers are sharing passwords, let alone try to curtail the behavior.
