How Core Routers Cause Havoc To Internet Service Customers

May 08

After internet service customers numbering about 1 million were affected by a recent outage, the core router has taken center stage. In this case, more than one router was involved, and the outage affected internet service in a whopping 21 states. Of course, the larger an ISP’s reach, the higher the risk that more customers will be affected – and the more likely they will be to take to social media to complain to others about the service, or lack thereof.

A core router, in this case is at the very top of what is essentially a hierarchy of routers. The core router is the fastest and most powerful, not to mention expensive. A core router can process literally millions of data packets per second. The core router also delivers data packets to slower routers down the line.
